GI Diagnostic Solutions Q & A

What are GI diagnostic solutions?

GI diagnostic solutions are the pathogen detection tests available at MD Molecular Diagnostics. The state-of-the-art laboratory uses the most advanced testing tools and technology so you get comprehensive, accurate, and fast results.

Many clinicians find it frustrating when their initial treatments for a patient’s gastrointestinal (GI) condition fail to get results. MD Molecular Diagnostics understands these frustrations, which is why they offer GI diagnostic solutions.

Knowing what’s causing your patient’s symptoms ensures you provide the most effective treatment possible.

When should a provider order GI diagnostic solutions?

A provider should order GI diagnostic solutions at MD Molecular Diagnostics when their patient has symptoms suggestive of a GI infection. Common symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloody stools
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

These types of infections may occur from bacterial, fungal, or parasitic pathogens. Knowing which pathogens are responsible for your patient’s symptoms makes it possible to provide the most effective treatment. Providing the proper treatment right away also reduces the risk of your patient developing a medication-resistant infection.

What are the GI diagnostic solutions tests?

MD Molecular Diagnostics offers multiple types of tests for its GI diagnostic solutions panel. Testing options include:

BioFiare® FilmArray®

The BioFire FilmArray from Biomerieux is a GI panel test that detects 22 GI pathogens from a stool sample using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). This molecular testing technology can detect bacteria, viruses, and parasites with a sensitivity of 98.5% and a specificity of 99.3%.

The accuracy of the BioFaire FilmArray is more effective than the wide majority of testing methods, especially with organisms that are difficult to culture and detect.

Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) toxin testing

GDH toxin testing is a test for Clostridium difficile (C. difficile), a common healthcare-acquired bacterial infection, and hospital-acquired diarrhea. C. difficile is a bacteria commonly present in the GI tract that may become pathogenic following antibiotic therapy that disrupts the normal gut flora.

MD Molecular Diagnostics performs the GDH toxin testing with an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test to differentiate between healthy and pathogenic C. difficile colonization.

Add-on testing

GI diagnostic solutions at MD Molecular Diagnostics also include add-on testing to check for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), calprotectin (immune system protein), pancreatic elastase (a pancreatic enzyme that breaks down fat), and fecal fat.

Results from the GI diagnostic solution tests at MD Molecular Diagnostics are routinely available within 24 hours.
